NAMBOUR – QR Protection Officer – 6 spaces

Protection Officer Queensland Rail

This course is for Queensland Rail Contractors approved and eligible to perform the task of a Protection Officer.

Queensland Rail Contractors employed as Protection Officers.

This course is aligned to the specific requirements of Queensland Rail’s Network Rules and Procedures MD-12-189. Protection Officer Queensland Network Rules & Procedures (QNRP)
• The training addresses safeworking and task requirements for the roles and responsibilities of workers who are required to assess, plan and implement trackside safety protection for themselves or workgroups as defined by Queensland Network Rules and Procedures (QNRP).

9.5 days (over two weeks).
During this time, learners will be guided through the Protection Officer and Clipping Points theory sessions by one of our highly experienced trainers.

Accell trainer, assessors hold a wealth of technical and field experience and maintain their Protection Officer roles to impart the complete package of quality training and assessment while providing learners with the knowledge to conduct safeworking roles with confidence.

Learning Outcome:
On successful completion of this course learners are required to complete 8 mentoring events within a  minimum of 3 months and maximum of 6 months period.
NOTE: Mentoring events must be completed with a Queensland Rail approved mentor that holds the valid RIW Job Role.

Assessment method:
Learners will:
• Successfully complete 6 theory assessments in the classroom,
• Complete a mentoring process in the field prior to being practically assessed
• Successfully complete a practical assessment

On completion of the nominated mentoring events and minimum duration a final practical assessment will be conducted prior to gaining competence.

Successful completion results in the issuance of the Queensland Rail enterprise qualification "QR3.16 Protection Officer", and elective "QR3.8 Clipping Points" and the national units of competency:
• TLIL3082 Implement Absolute Signal Blocking
• TLIE0002 Process Workplace Documentation
• TLIE2029 Conduct Workplace Information Briefings
• TLIF3083 Conduct Track Protection Assessment
• TLIG1001 Work Effectively With Others
• TLIE1005 Carry Out Basic Workplace Calculations
• TLIW0007 Operate Under Track Protection Rules
• TLIW2037 Clip and Secure Points

At the successful completion learners will have the following knowledge and skills:
• Describe the role and responsibilities of a Protection Officer (PO)
• Use the Rules and Procedures to obtain relevant information for PO activity
• Identify key considerations in their area of operation (Walking in the danger zone)
• Describe the methods and types of protection relevant to given situations
• Undertake the requirements for planning for protection
• Undertake the requirements for implementing and managing protection

Reaccreditation: 3 years – field assessment. Reaccreditation requires a valid RIW Protection Officer Role. This includes all monitoring events maintained and up to date. If not maintained full retraining is required.

Monitoring: 3, 6 & 12 months for first time qualified and then annually from date of first being qualified.

Additional Pathways:
To add to their current skills, qualified Protection Officers can attend additional sessions to obtain the Standalone Electives:
  • QR3.5 Railway Track Signals
  • QR3.7 In field Protection (pre-requisite QR3.5)
  • QR3.17 Managing Multiple Worksites (pre-requisites - QR3.5, QR3.7, completion of 3 month & 6 Month Protection Officer mentoring requirements).
  • QR3.18 Managing Rail Traffic (pre-requisites - QR3.5, QR3.7, completion of 3 month & 6 Month Protection Officer mentoring requirements).
Note: To obtain both QR3.17 & QR3.18, 4 mentoring events within a minimum 3 and maximum 6 months period is required prior to the final assessment.
